Regional Workshop on Eel and the Baltic Sea
The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission invited the Sargasso Sea Commission to co-host the "Regional Workshop on Eel and the Baltic Sea" in Stockholm, Sweden, from 29 November - 1 December. The workshop was organized in cooperation with the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, the Swedish University of Agricultural Science, and the Convention on Migratory Species Secretariat.
The goal of the workshop was to exchange information on challenges and opportunities in eel assessment and management in the Baltic, as well as next steps for a Baltic-wide stock status assessment. Attendees included representatives from management bodies, scientific experts, and stakeholders in change of eel assessment and management in nine countries around the Baltic Sea and its tributaries. Executive Secretary Dr David Freestone attended and gave a presentation about the importance of the Sargasso Sea as a spawning ground for the European eel and the Commission's work to-date on eel conservation - including the First Range States Workshop in October 2016.
