About Our Work

United Nations Environment Programme

On 2 May 2017, Dr David Freestone, Executive Secretary of the Sargasso Sea Commission, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with United Nations Environment. The purpose of this Memorandum is to provide a framework of cooperation for the Secretariats of the Commission and of two UNEP Regional Seas Conventions - the Cartagena Convention in the Wider Caribbean, and the Abidjan Convention in West Africa. It will facilitate collaboration towards their shared goals through regular dialogue, stakeholder engagement, and strategy development. All parties hope that this partnership will raise awareness of the Sargasso Sea ecosystem and harmonize their shared goal of conserving the Sargasso Sea and its natural resources.
